No, eating clean doesn’t mean you have to consume laundry detergent or dish soap.

Eating clean means that you pass on all of those processed foods in favor of natural, whole foods like vegetables, fruits, whole grains and lean proteins.

It’s no secret that North Americans consume way too much sugar, sodium and fat on a daily basis. Unfortunately, these foods line the grocery store shelves at every turn.

Once you learn how to substitute these foods for more natural alternatives, though, you will be able to lose weight, and maintain your health for years to come. There are some specific strategies you can implement in order to eat clean for the rest of your life.

Step 1

Go through your pantry and cupboards and get rid of all the processed foods that you find. Chips, crackers, bottled dressings, sauces, snacks, cereals that are full of sugar   and anything else with a list of ingredients that you can’t pronounce.

Step 2

Now it’s time to shop for clean foods. Load up on a variety of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, natural seeds and nuts like almonds and pumpkin seeds, skim milk and meats like skinless chicken, bison or fresh water fish.

Canned vegetables are okay as long as they are low in sodium and don’t have any preservatives or artificial colors. Read the labels carefully; anything that says ‘modified’ or lists things you can’t pronounce should stay on the shelf.

Step 3

Plan to eat smaller meals more often throughout the day. Eating every 4-5 hours will keep your metabolism running at high speed, which will burn fat even when you’re at rest.

Step 4

Get used to controlling your portions. Meat should be consumed 3-4 oz servings, with ½ cup of starchy veggies or whole grains. Try not to go back for seconds, but if you do, opt for plain vegetables.

Step 5

Get creative with your cooking and use spices, herbs, vinegar and citrus to season your food instead of prepared sauces and mayonnaise (these are loaded with sodium and preservatives). Instead of frying, try broiling, sautéing and grilling your food.

Step 6

Combine protein with complex carbs at every meal. Some good choices are almonds with fruit, low-fat cheese with carrot sticks, and yogurt with berries. There are literally dozens of combinations.

Step 7

Make sure to include healthy fats into your diet. Olive oil, avocado, coconut oil, and nuts are all great choices. Your body needs these essential fatty acids in order to function properly. You’ll also notice that your hair and nails are shinier.

Step 8

Take the time to sit down and enjoy your meal. The slower you eat, the more likely it is that you will feel full before you even finish.

Step 9

Water, water, water! You need at least 2 liters a day. Liven it up with slices of lemon, orange or some berries. Never use artificial sweeteners or ‘low calorie’ products like Crystal Light.

Step 10

Plan ahead. Pack a brown bag or cooler for when you are at work or will be out for the day. Learn how to identify good choices for when you are at a restaurant.

This process takes time, and there will be occasions where you will indulge in a glass of wine, or have some chocolate cake. Don’t be too hard on yourself. If you don’t treat yourself every so often, you will become bored and will likely abandon the eating clean method for good.

Take things slow and give your palette time to adjust to the new tastes. Once you have shunned all of the junk food, you will wonder why you ever craved it in the first place.
