Allergies: Definition

Allergies are a hypersensitive reaction to certain foreign substances by the immune system of the body. These kinds of reactions occur against otherwise harmless substances in the environment, which are called as allergens. For most of the people the allergies are rapid acquired and predictable. Allergy is a kind of hypersensitivity, characterized by activation of the white blood cells and basophiles excessively due to the presence of an antibody called as IgE. The response is extreme inflammation. Some common allergies are hives, hay fever, eczema, asthma attacks, food allergies, reactions to insects etc.

Usually allergy is characterized by mild symptoms like itchiness, running nose, allergic conjunctivitis etc. these kinds of allergies are highly prevalent among the humans. However, some people suffer from severe allergic reactions against some dietary and environmental allergens. Sometimes, a person can be allergic towards certain kind of medications too. Such reactions may result in life threatening situations. Asthma is one such severe reaction. The allergens are usually the pollen grains, dust etc.
With the advancement in the technology, the test for allergies have also been developed and improved. These usually include analyzing the skin for any kind of response to the known allergens, presence of antibodies related to allergies In the blood and checking on its levels. The treatments are based on avoiding the places where the allergens are present, i.e. avoiding contact with the allergens. The medications used include anti-histamines; steroids etc. there are several oral medications also. The immunotherapy is used to desensitize response against the allergen and therapy.
