What is the condition that is known as Diabetic Ketoacidosis?

There are times that an individual’s body is producing adequate amounts of blood glucose, and the levels show to be high, yet the body still is not receiving an appropriate amount of energy from the blood sugar. In this case, the physician will usually diagnose the patient with diabetic ketoacidosis. This condition happens when not enough insulin is being produced to send signals to the body’s cells to turn the blood sugar into the energy that it needs.

When this occurs, rather than glucose, the muscles and fat begins to be broken down by the body so that it can obtain the energy it needs. The result is a metabolic imbalance that occurs because of ketones or fatty acids that are produced, and then enter into the individual’s bloodstream. Diabetic ketoacidosis can occur in individuals with diabetes type 1 and type 2, when blood sugar levels become much higher than they should be. Some of the most common symptoms that can occur with this type of condition are mental confusion, skin that feels hot, vomiting, vision that is blurred, abdominal pain, excessive thirst, breath that smells fruity and sweet, sleepiness, and breathing that is rapid.
