- 1st stage – This stage is when the idea to kick the nicotine habit hits a person because of pressure they have received from family and friends.
- 2nd stage – During this stage, the smoker makes a conscious decision that they do intend to quit smoking at some later point in time in their life. They generally still find enjoyment in the addiction at this point.
- 3rd stage – This stage is where the smoker begins to prepare themselves for an attempt to quit smoking. They will often switch to brands with less nicotine, and try to smoke fewer cigarettes.
- 4th stage – Determination hits and the smoker actually tries to quit smoking, facing nicotine withdrawal symptoms and strong urges to smoke.
- 5th stage – Post-maintenance usually starts a year after a person stops smoking. During this stage, as many as 75% of individuals who kick the habit, pick it right back up again.
